World War 2 trip to Cardiff Castle

Years 3 and 4 have been studying World War 2 as their topic this term. To reinforce their learning, we arranged a trip to Cardiff Castle where the children were able to meet and question an Air Raid Precaution Officer, as well as receive a tour of the tunnels and shelters which were used to protect 1,800 Cardiff residents during WW2.

Children were also given the opportunity to try on gas masks. They had to try putting the masks on within 10 seconds to understand the panic people might have felt when they had to try getting them on in a hurry during the War. We took part in a 'Make Do & Mend' session where children made Christmas decorations from the era out of pine cones and various materials. To complete the day, we all sang songs from the era, including Vera Lynn's 'We'll Meet Again'.
